Resources

Here are some resources on the web that you might find helpful.

Finding a Private School
If you would like to find a private school in your area, go to http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pss/privateschoolsearch/. The Council for American Private Education has a way to select schools by zip code and other criteria. It might save you time.

Family Budget and Finance
To help plan your finances to achieve educational goals, you can go to the National Endowment for Financial Education at www.nefe.org. Another excellent website is Operation Hope at www.operationhope.org, where economic literacy and empowerment is the focus.

Family Services
A wide range of family services in Los Angeles can be found at Para Los Ninos at www.paralosninos.org.

Funds for Private High Schools
For parents who are looking for scholarships to high schools, here are several websites that may be helpful:

The Catholic Education Foundation http://www.catholiced-foundation.org
A Better Chance http://www.abetterchance.org

We also suggest that you contact the high school you are interested in and ask if they offer financial aid.

High Schools (Charter)
For parents who are looking for options for their children beyond the eighth grade and who do not have resources for private high school, one option is a charter high school. Charter schools are public schools (free to the public), yet they are run independently from the public school system. Many charter schools are smaller than traditional public high schools. For more information, call the California Charter School Association for help at (866) 415-2272.

Home Schooling
If you are thinking about home schooling, you might want to check out www.californiahomeschool.net. You may also be interested in California Virtual Academies. These are virtual public charter schools where a computer and curriculum are provided to you at home, and teachers monitor your child's progress online. There is no charge to the family since the children are enrolled in a virtual charter school. Visit their website at www.caliva.org.

Mentoring
If you feel your child could benefit from a mentor who can help with homework, reading, or math, call The Fulfillment Fund at (310) 788-9700 or visit their website at www.fulfillmentfund.org. Another excellent mentoring program is Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters at www.catholicbigbrothers.org.

Summer Programs
COSMOS (California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science) offers outstanding residential summer enrichment courses in science and math for qualified students beyond 8th grade through high school. Participation is competitive. Scholarships are available. The website is www.ucop.edu/cosmos/welcome.html.

Tutoring
Under the No Child Left Behind Act, if your child attends a public school that receives Title 1 federal money, and your family qualifies for the federal lunch program, your child may be entitled to receive free tutoring. Call the U.S. Department of Education's information line at 1-888-814-6252 for more details.
