Financier Offers Tuition for Overturned Program

Ted Forstmann, the philanthropist and financier, offered yesterday to pay the private school tuition of 53 Florida children in an experimental, taxpayer-financed voucher program that was ruled in violation of the state constitution on Tuesday.

Under the Florida judge’s ruling, the state would have to stop paying the tuition at the end of the school year. Mr. Forstmann said he would give scholarships to the students beginning next fall, but did not say for how long or how much.

Mr. Forstmann, a champion of vouchers, is the chairman and chief executive of the Children’s Scholarship Fund, which last year awarded 40,000 four-year scholarships to low-income families across the country.
